Wells Food Festival

Wells Food Festival, which returns on Sunday, 13 October for its 12th year, is committed to celebrating Somerset’s rich and diverse food and drink offering. The festival showcases and champions small artisan producers and independent food businesses who put quality and integrity at the heart of what they produce, helping to encourage a sustainable food culture. Of the 200 traders that make up the artisan market, the majority of these are Somerset based using local ingredients.

Wells is a city that has a thriving community culture and with this in mind the festival also has an area dedicated to highlighting current, food related, social issues. The Food for Thought marquee demonstrates what communities can achieve when they come together to tackle some of the challenges that face us through food poverty, food waste, healthy living and lifestyle issues.

In terms of the event’s carbon footprint, Wells Food Festival employs local company J Witt to manage the event’s rubbish. Instead of onsite recycling bins, which are prone to cross contamination, we use mixed waste bins which are removed and sorted off site at J Witt’s recycling plant in Coleford. This has successfully enabled us to minimise our waste tonnage to landfill – J Witt can recycle as much as 100% of the waste - and reduced our waste mileage.
